News: CureVac begins phase three Covid-19 vaccine trials

CureVac, a biopharma company based in Tübingen, Germany, has announced their entry into phase three clinical trials for their Covid-19 vaccine, called CVnCoV. This stage of the medical trials has recruited healthcare workers at the University Medical Center Mainz, in Germany.

The vaccine itself is a non-chemically modified mRNA, and requires two doses. This vaccine -- like the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines which are beginning distribution in the United States -- use messenger RNA to guide the body’s cells in defense against the virus.

The study is focusing on hospital employees because it aims to test the efficacy of the vaccine as well as to gain insight into the specific risks and vulnerability of healthcare workers -- specifically, the study is examining the rate at which Covid-19 specific antibodies rise in healthcare workers and how quickly the virus spreads among these groups.

The study uses a randomized, placebo-controlled and observer-blind clinical protocol involving over 2,500 participants aged 18 and over. The clinical trials complement the Phase IIb/III HERALD trial which began recently and involved more than 35,000 participants.

Following the initial stages of the trial, CureVac stated that the vaccine was well-tolerated and introduced neutralising antibody responses, and that no patients developed serious side effects.

In an interview with Clinical Trials Arena, the head of Infectious diseases at CureVac, Dr. Lidia Oostvogels said: “Based on this trial, we hope to gain additional insights for effective prevention of Covid-19 in this vulnerable population.”
