We’ve discussed the importance of pet product claims and the clinical research process previously -- but how do clinical trials for these products actually look? Today we’ll deep-dive into three clinical trials conducted on pet products and their results.
Glucosamine/Chondroitin in canine arthritis
A clinical trial involving 35 dogs tested the efficacy and safety of an orally delivered drug (Glu/CS) to treat osteoarthritis of the hips and elbows. This condition is fairly common in dogs, particularly as they age, and causes greatly limited mobility as well as cause pain and lead to further health issues. The medication was delivered for several months and the results showed dogs treated with Glu/CS experienced improved scores in pain, weight-bearing, and decreased severity of symptoms.
Enteric coating for Exocrine Pancreatic insufficiency
In dogs with Exocrine pancreas insufficiency (EPI) enzyme treatment is usually used. Enteric-coated treatments have been developed to prevent the degradation of the enzyme in the stomach, and they were tested recently to determine whether adding the coating would make the original treatment less effective.
38 dogs with EPI were involved in a trial, wherein the coated drug was delivered over a period of 56 days.
Nutritional supplements for Canine cognitive dysfunction
Elderly dogs can experience cognitive decline, which seriously impacts their quality of life. Some research has suggested that nutritional supplementation may improve cognitive symptoms. A trial conducted in the UK across 20 veterinary clinics found a significant difference between the treated groups and the dogs not receiving nutritional supplements.
Their scores on measurements of disorientation, changes in interaction, and house soiling behavior improved over the course of the 56-day trial.
These trials demonstrate the importance of clinical trials in pet products and the rigor that goes into creating pet product claims.
